ARTIFICIAL REALITY
Artificial Reality is an ongoing abstract photographic series and was born during the pandemic. Through abstraction I express the surreal artificial reality that came to dominate our vision of the world.
As the pandemic closed in, I found myself feeling the world shrink. This unsettling feeling slipped around me like a dark embrace I was desperate to escape. So as many did, I looked to technology to reach out beyond the walls. Suddenly, my only vision of the world was through those LCD screens many of us used to see "outside". We communicated with family and friends, gained information and through entertainment, escaped the weight of our circumstances.
I trained my camera on these amazing pieces of technology and began to express how they influenced my perception of the world. The surreal quality of my circumstances is mirrored in the abstract nature of the work. Color, shape and depth are punctuated by bands of pixel structures revealed in the liquid crystal displays. A sense of place is emphasized by degrees of depth and shadow. These surreal, mysterious abstractions invite flights of the imagination which give rise to new narratives. These narratives need not be explicit, but implied and even co-constructed with you the viewer, engaging you as participants in Artificial Reality.
